During February I was approached by Aviva who were looking for a Dorking commercial photographer. This was to help photograph a project they had funded at Dorking Nursery School and Children’s Centre. Aviva is committed to building stronger communities. One of the ways it implements this, is through the Aviva Community Fund. Over the last few years the community fund has awarded millions to projects up and down the country. Open to everyone, groups submit applications for much needed funding. This is to be in with a chance of securing between £1,000 and £25,000.
The Nursery School
Dorking Nursery School and Children’s Centre is the only maintained nursery school in Dorking. It is for children aged 2-5 years. It has been at the heart of the Dorking community since 1939. The nursery have been rated ‘outstanding’ in the last six Ofsted inspections. They are designated as a National Support School by the Department for Education. They are selected to support schools in challenging circumstances and to train new teachers. Additionally, the Children’s Centre is an invaluable resource for local families from birth onwards. For example offering support and advice as well as activities and courses.
In line with other maintained schools, funding has become increasingly difficult. The centre has had to use state funding for operational costs. Therefore leaving very little for improvement of facilities. They engage in regular fundraising activities to provide new equipment for all the children to enjoy.
The latest project funded by Aviva focused on health and well-being. Furthermore they are using the funds to extend their outdoor spaces that support sensory play. Similarly learners enjoy getting their hands on playing with mud and water. This is also developing important physical, social and emotional skills. Their enhanced outdoor spaces promote physical activity. I addition it builds confidence and more opportunities for developing life skills.
It was a pleasure to visit the centre. I met the staff and some of the gorgeous children who are enjoying the wonderful new outdoor spaces.
Comment
After the session the head teacher commented. “Wow, Nicola – thank you so much for the photographs. These are just gorgeous. I love them”. My pleasure I hope that the pictures are useful. Furthermore that you have continued success in your applications for funding in the future. It’s great to see companies such as Aviva supporting our local communities. Making a real difference to the lives of the next generation.
