Capturing your family growing up

This autumn family photoshoot in Surrey reminded me why the tween and teen years are such a special time to capture. This lovely family have two fun daughters full of personality and energy. It is such a fleeting stage of life where childhood meets independence and everything is changing so quickly.

Relaxed at home in the garden – family photoshoot Surrey

They chose to hold the session in their garden which holds special memories for them so it was the perfect setting. Being at home helps everyone relax straight away and it allows children to be themselves without any pressure. The girls could chat, laugh and move freely which always leads to the most genuine expressions.

The light was beautiful throughout the morning session. I used soft backlighting to create flattering images with a warm natural glow. This style works so well for family photography as it adds a timeless feel.

Mix it up

Towards the end of the shoot everyone changed outfits which is a simple way to add variety to your shoot. It was also great for the family Christmas card! It gives a slightly different look and keeps the session fun. We captured a mix of relaxed moments and a few more styled portraits so the family has a wide selection of images to enjoy.

Capturing work and family life

What made this session even more special was that I had previously photographed the Mum for a personal brand shoot for her speech therapy business. It is always lovely to work with clients across different parts of their lives. From business to family it tells a fuller story of who you are.

We kept things simple, walking, chatting and letting moments happen naturally rather than forcing poses. Of course the family dog joined us too, which always brings an extra layer of personality to the images.

A summer garden prom to remember – why I love being a Surrey prom photographer

This prom was something really special. I was so pleased to be their Surrey prom photographer. Set in a beautiful garden with warm evening light and plenty of space, it felt relaxed from the moment everyone arrived. No formal stiffness, just friends together celebrating the end of exams and the start of something new.

There were mostly girls, with a few brave (!) boyfriends joining in, all dressed up and ready to enjoy the night. There was such a lovely energy. Lots of excitement and that sense of freedom after working so hard.

Hay bales, cocktails and dancing

The garden setting made everything feel more fun and informal. Hay bales scattered around gave everyone somewhere to sit, chat and take it all in. Groups gathered, laughing and taking photos before heading back to the music tent.

Cocktail cans in hand, donuts being passed around and music playing in the background, it quickly turned into a proper celebration. Once the dancing started, it did not stop. Friends pulling each other onto the dance floor, singing along and just enjoying being together.

As a Surrey prom photographer, these are the moments I love to capture. Nothing staged, just real memories unfolding.

Friendships that matter

What stood out most was the closeness of the group. This was not just a party, it was a moment marking years of friendship. Some are staying on for A levels, others are moving to new schools, so there was a real mix of emotions.

Between the laughter and dancing, there were quieter moments too. Friends sitting together on hay bales, hugging a little longer than usual, a few tears as it all started to sink in. Those in between moments are often the most meaningful.

Beautiful multi generation family photography in Clandon

As a Clandon family photographer I love capturing families in places that feel meaningful to them. For this lovely session we photographed everyone in the family’s own garden which made the images feel even more personal and relaxed.

Home can be the perfect setting for family photography. Children, especially younger ones, feel comfortable in familiar surroundings and the whole session has a natural and easy atmosphere.

It was wonderful to have their lovely grandparents included in this shoot. Multi generation family photography sessions always feel incredibly special. They capture the love connection and personalities of every generation in one place.

This shoot last summer featured a beautiful confident teenage girl who really enjoyed her relaxed summer session in the nearby woods. We chose Winterfold Woods, a stunning Surrey location filled with tall trees, heathers, ferns and soft light.

Teenage photography Surrey

Do you have teenagers in your family? You might be considering getting some family photography taken or want a shoot just for the children. My teenage photography sessions are very popular particularly when the children are leaving school and perhaps heading off to university. I travel all over Surrey and beyond for the teenage photography sessions. You choose the venue, maybe your garden or somewhere special that the teens like to go. If there is nowhere in particular I am happy to suggest in options.

Some people might consider the teenage years to be a bit awkward. But I’ve always had such a brilliant time with the teens I have photographed. By the time the children have hit 13 or so they really decide what they want to do on the shoot. So I really hand over to them to think about what we do, to capture them in a natural way. Of course they will also be deciding what to wear. So parents please let them express themselves whilst diplomatically also considering my what to wear guide!!

I was really thrilled to do this Haslemere Surrey family photographer session in the summer. The session was bought as a Christmas voucher. So after contacting the family in January, they chose July for their family photography shoot. The obvious choice for location was their beautiful home and garden in Haslemere. You are welcome to choose where the shoot will take place. Your garden, or somewhere special you like to go together. Otherwise I can make suggestions.

We had a great morning hanging out in the garden. There were some lovely spots for sitting, chatting and hanging out. We took lots of different combinations. These included all the family together, single portraits of the children and of the siblings together. We also focused on each of the children with each parent and one of the parents together. These are the usual combinations for a family photoshoot but you’re welcome to tweak them as each session is bespoke so very much meets your particular needs.

2017 Family and headshot photography session highlights

So it seems I have still not found the magical solution to stopping time, even after trying a wide array of wands on a brilliant day out at Harry Potter World earlier this month! So for the time being, we shall all have to be content enjoying every day we do have with our family and friends even if they whizz by so quickly!

The reason I take so many photos of my children (several thousand each year!) is that I like to record the moments I might forget in years to come. It’s the little details that I love, sometimes overlooked. But in years to come will bring me such happiness when they remind me what they were like at that stage of their lives. I love looking at a portrait that brings back not only a visual reference to that moment but brings back the sound of the laughter, the warmth of the sunshine or the smell of the flowers. I certainly felt that when I looked through all the headshot and family photography sessions I had in 2017. They all brought back such happy memories of the fun we had during these family photoshoots. That’s the important word, ‘fun’! That really is the essence of my photography sessions. We are having fun, it shines through the pictures, brings out your true personalities, whilst you are having a great time! I am so pleased when people feedback that they didn’t realise it was going to be so much fun! That’s my aim, for your children to enjoy what they like doing best. If they are happy, you are happy and we can relax and enjoy ourselves!

Thank you so much for your support in 2017, it really has meant so much to me! It was an amazing year and I feel very honoured to have captured such special moments for so many lovely families. I have lots of exciting plans for 2018, and look forward to sharing these with you soon!

Dorking Family Photographer

I am pretty sure you can hear the laughter from just looking at the pictures from this Dorking family photographer session. The children get on so well and clearly adore their parents, their close relationships were evident throughout the morning. The family love bluebells so we picked a really quiet woods. Luckily we didn’t see a single other person so we had the whole place to ourselves. The children loved to mess about, climb trees, check out a den and have a few running races!

I really adore all flowers, but in particular bluebells! I always get excited when I see them appearing in the woods next to our house. When you look out of the window it looks like an endless carpet of blue, it looks so magical! We always look for fairies when I take my children. Or make us stories as we tread careful through the paths. You don’t want to disturb the flowers too much otherwise they might not come up again. It’s important to teach the children to respect nature. Mine loving flowers and growing them. We are even trying a few vegetables this year. We will have to see how they go! Better remember to water them!

It was great that we had their Auntie along too as she was brilliant fun and had the best sense of humour. I wanted to borrow her for my afternoon shoot as she was great at making the children laugh with her funny jokes! She had us all in stitches! I can’t wait to deliver their frames, they will look stunning and I am sure they will enjoy them everyday.

2016 Review!

It always amazes me how quickly the year flies by, I know it’s a cliche but it really does! If anyone has the secret to slow down time, please do share it with me!

I have finished my outdoor shoots for the year which will thankfully allow me to catch up on some Christmas shopping and then all the wrapping! I do love Christmas and all it entails. We like to get our tree on the first weekend of December as we are too excited to wait any longer! I love all the rituals particularly those involving the children like watching their nativity plays, carol concerts and of course writing to Father Christmas and eating too many mince pies!

Christmas usually brings me time to reflect on the year gone by and to look forward to welcoming in a brand new year. 2016 has been a cracker on every level and I feel so grateful and proud to share with you my favourite highlights from sessions over the past 12 months. I really enjoyed collating these, it reminded me of so many happy times, special places and wonderful people who have come into my life. Thank you so much for being part of the journey and choosing me to capture your gorgeous families!
